About ATLANTA STREETS ALIVE
For the past two years since its inception, Atlanta Streets Alive has been a twice-yearly event where everyone from cyclists to skateboarders to roller bladers to children can reclaim the streets of Atlanta as the ultimate play space. The one to two mile stretch of street opened for the events has been on Edgewood in Downtown Atlanta – in Atlanta City Council District 2–with the support of City Council member Kwanza Hall. The idea to open the streets to the public was inspired by the model of Ciclovia,an event in Bogota where roads are closed to car traffic and opened for thousands of people to take over the streets. From humble beginnings on just a few city blocks, today Bogota’s Ciclovia encompasses 70 miles of streets with about 800,000 participants each Sunday from 7am-2pm. Hundreds of similar open streets events have occurred all over the world, celebrating community space, health, outdoor recreation, and active transportation.
